George Tinworth (1843-1913) for Doulton Lambeth; The 'Menagerie' Clock, c.1885. A very rare and fine example of Tinworth's humoresque work, with nineteen zoomorphic depictions mice in three different situations; 'The Three Card Trick', 'The Wild Beast Show' and 'The Wheel of Fortune'. The scenes convening around the central stairway with the titles incised below each scene. The main body with 'The Menagerie' incised above the enamelled clock dial with sgrafitto decorations to front and sides illustrating the attractions of 'The Wild Beast Show'; a Lion, a Tiger, a Rhinoceros and a Stork under dark green glaze. With a monkey swinging to right of the central doorway and parrot to the far left hand-side. The sides are decorated accordingly, with an elephant emerging from a window on the left facing side. GT signature incised in the 'Wheel of Fortune' scene and EP incision to back, as well as Doulton Lambeth factory stamps. W 23cm x D 14cm x H 25cm. Provenance: purchased from Sylvia Powell Decorative Arts (LAPADA) with receipt dated 2003.
