Consigned from a deceased estate, Mrs J B – a lady who lived about eight miles from Honiton; with her husband, they were a keen collectors of art.
She became friends with the owner of the Lewes Gallery who sold Duncan Grant’s work, and subsequently, the owner of the gallery took Mrs J B to meet Duncan Grant.
About a year after Duncan Grant’s death, his daughter, Angelica Garnett held an open day at Charleston; Mrs J B went to that open day and, from this early stage, became a ‘Friend’ of Charleston House.
The picture has remained in Mrs J B’s home since its purchase. The sale has been arranged by the daughter and son of Mrs J B, following a probate valuation that Chilcotts carried out in July 2022.
