£5,000
A rare Chelsea or St James (Charles Gouyn) gold mounted porcelain Scent Bottle, c.1750's, in the form of a swan, the soft-paste porcelain painted white with black feet and beak details, the head forming the stopper, concave base painted with naturalistic flowers on white ground, continued on upper surface, the mounts unmarked but tested as 18ct gold, 7.7cm high, in original velvet lined shagreen presentation case.
Charles Gouyn was a Huguenot Jeweller who joined with Nicholas Sprimont to set up the Chelsea Porcelain Factory in c.1745. By 1748 he was working in his own rival factory producing 'toys' such as these scent bottles, although these items, also known as ' 'Girl-in-a-Swing' products often imitated designs produced by the Chelsea Factory and therefore the attribution to one or the other is uncertain.
